Rotary Blood Bank
56, 57, Tughlakabad Institutional Area
New Delhi 110062
A community project
to save lives and alleviate suffering.

Based on 100% voluntary blood donations.
Funded by Rotary Foundation, Central and State Governments, Public Sector Corporations, Rotarians and other philanthropic individuals.

In India we need about 9 million units of blood every year, but only about 4.2 million units are collected every year. This means a shortage of more than 50%! In Delhi alone, the shortfall is approximately 50,000 units per year.

The Rotary Blood Bank has been established to alleviate the tremendous shortage of healthy, fully tested blood and blood components.

The Bank relies totally on voluntary blood donations. Blood is given to anybody who requires it, on referral by a doctor. A small service fee is levied to cover processing and testing costs*. But otherwise, the blood is free.

There is no replacement required. Donation is strictly voluntary.

The principle of giving and receiving free blood is humanitarian. And it is safe.

Most blood banks in Delhi have been operating on compulsory replacement donations. This causes undue stress and difficulty to the recipient. If the person is unable to locate healthy replacement donors, unfit or professional donors may step in. As everyone knows, the blood of professional donors is of uncertain quality. Professional donors are now barred by law but the practice is still prevalent because of the wide gap in demand and supply.

Voluntary blood donation, on the other hand, is done by people driven by the desire to do good to others. The reliablility factor is high since reportage on health conditions is more accurate and not motivated by monetary gains.

The Indian Government, WHO, Red Cross International and others are united in their opinion that voluntary blood donation is the only way to ensure safe blood. The Rotary Blood Bank is proud to become part of this movement in New Delhi, deploying the very latest technology and techniques in Blood Banking and transfusion medicine.

*This fee is waived for persons who cannot afford to pay.
